Hey all…first time coming to Hangout, been to other festivals…just looking for some advice/tips to prepare.  How early does everyone show up before the gates open?  Shuttles/taxis/park?  How much is booze/food at the show?  Do they release any kind of daily schedule showing you stage by stage with time slots?  Any other tips would be greatly appreciated as well.  Thanks so much all and look forward to May.

First off, remember, the shows are on the beach. You cannot get in the water, but will be walking in sand all day long. You wouldn't believe how many people(girls) wore uggs and high heels and other boots and crap and were either miserable or ended up leaving them in the sand. If anything, wear cheap flip flops that you don't mind losing. I would say go barefoot, but waiting in line is in the hot sun on asphalt, and it gets really hot.

Other than that, you cannot bring any liquids in, but you can bring empty camelback or nalgene water bottles. They do have plenty of food stands and beverages available, but at a high cost.

All that being said, fill your water bottles or camelback with water before you show up at the gate. Yes, you may have to dump it out right before entrance, but if you have to wait an hour in the hot sun on asphalt, you will be so glad you have water while waiting. Last year, we dumped our water out before getting line, not realizing just how long the wait would be.

There are several bars, souvenir shops, restaurants, etc, within walking distance to the grounds, you can leave during time slots that may not be interesting to you and have lunch/drinks then come back in.

Best to ride bikes or catch the shuttle if it comes close to where you are staying. There are not a lot of proper bike racks, but plenty of walkway railings and other things you can lock your bike to. The police are real lenient about where you leave your bikes that weekend.

But, this festival is on a public beach, not private land like lots of other festivals. Keep that in mind when you choose to indulge in your prefered party favors. Lots of cops in the festival and around the area. Undercover also. Watch for people with assistance dogs…they might not be for disability purposes. Watch for anyone that is wearing footwear not typical to a beach music festival.

There will be a daily schedule showing all the times, stages, etc. Last year it was released a couple weeks beforehand on this site.

Sunscreen! There is very little shade.

Let me know if there is anything else I can help with. I am local, live within walking distance of the Hangout.Laugh

Methodical…Thanks so much for the response.  Just a couple other things since ya offered.

There are 6 of us comin down and we got a condo that's 5 miles away from the gates.  We're just kind of wondering if it's worth it to spend $240 on shuttle passes with all the horror stories I've read about.  I heard there are parking spaces that locals sell for a decent cost.  If you were us, what would you suggest?

We have a tradition of taking a painter's canvas to use as a tarp into the festival and creating a mural throughout the weekend, from pictures and videos it doesn't look like many people bring tarps or blankets.  Are the pictures misleading or would we be completely out of line to bring one in?

And finally, is it fairly easy to sneak flasks in if you know what you're doing?

Thank you again so much.

Don't bring a blanket in unless you're ready for it to get walked on. They are annoying and cause problems please don't bring one

1-2 hours to wait in line if you show up to the gates Friday around 3pm.

After you get in the first time, the wait is minimal to none on Saturday or Sunday.

I didn't see many cops at all on the beach. Just be smart though.

I was allowed to keep the water in my camelback, don't know why people are saying you had to dump it.

Had a tough time finding the goods, hope there is more around this year. (wtf Alabama!!! cmon')

Don't get the shuttle pass. Drive and park. lots of people selling parking within walking distance. Unless you have too, but you will wait 2-3 hours after the show ends at 11.

They release a daily schedule closer to the show (probably in May). It seemed like the main stages alternated, but the electronic stage had a lot of overlap with the others.  They had a decent selection of food, but count on the dreaded $8 beer. Luckily there is re-entry, so you could always leave and come back.

We're staying at the Royal Palms which is about a mile from the Hangout.  It's the last condo complex on the east side before the state park.  Would you consider that walking distance?  Can we walk the beach all the way to the festival?  Thanks.

Kathey.. royal palms is where i stayed at last year, and staying at again this year. i dont think its even a full mile to the gates. we walked it back and forth from the festival multiple times throughout the day. its probably only about a 15 min walk.  you can walk the beach the whole way till you get to the gates so its not a bad walk at all.  theres a group of about 8 of us staying there, coming in from dallas.

We are staying at Las Palmas next to the Pier 33 shuttle pick up on the West line. It's says its only .8 miles from the festival. Is it worth getting a shuttle pass or easier to just walk?

Cops: Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they aren't there. There are under covers all over and Im sure it will be worse next year. A friend of mine got arrested and AL doesn't play. He is still dealing with a bunch of tough shit. Saw a dad and daughter dancing in the sand. Father was smoking, cops cuffed him in front of the little girl and took them both.

I had different experiences with bag checks each time I entered the fest. Sometimes they made me pour out my camel bak, sometimes they didn't, sometimes I just "got lost" in the incoming crowd before they could stop me. I kept an eye on the checkers, just like I do at every fest. Typically the slower lines are getting checked harder (duh), but they also were the ones were cops were frequently standing… saw a couple people get in some trouble there too…

I never had trouble with shuttles, but we stayed on West Beach, which has A LOT less high rises and condo complexes than East Beach. I think that helped a lot. Waiting at night sucked sometimes but we stay like a mile and a half away so walking or bike riding was an option. The shuttles are, unfortunately, probably a must if you are so far away. Sure driving and parking is an option… but drinking and driving is not. Either buy the shuttle pass or be prepared to pay for cab rides, which given the traffic and the annoying lights on East Beach, might be quite pricey.

Blankets are a hassle, towels or small tapestries are a much better option. The sand gets all over everything and people walking by just make it worse. I had a large tapestry last year, which I take to every fest, and found myself thoroughly annoyed with it after the first day.

Getting from one show to another can be a pain in the ass. There are a lot of people crammed into a space not so wide… If you don't have VIP, make sure to map out your "have to see" schedule carefully and be prepared to leave shows early if you want to see back to back acts. Unless things are 100% different with the layout, assume it will be the same this year. I arrived at Ween last year like an hour early and was probably 10,000 people back/could barely hear a thing. We got to Flaming Lips at the beginning of their set and had to leave because we literally could not see or hear a single thing. Confused

Hangout is FAR from a typical festival, but its a BLAST! Its just a big ass beach party with great music! Its definitely a fest you want to put some planning into and try your hardest to follow the rules, at least while you're inside festival gates.

See you guys on the beach! Cool
